Trump Embraces Indictments, DOJ's Protective Order & Mounts Defense in Alabama Campaign

08:40 05.08.2023

Former President Donald Trump declared his legal troubles a "badge of honor" during a speech at the annual Alabama GOP dinner. Trump, who appeared unfazed by the growing list of charges he faces, claimed that each indictment has actually helped his campaign. He jokingly said that one more indictment would solidify his election victory, stating that "nobody has even a chance" if he faces another charge.

Trump has been indicted three times since March, with the latest charges accusing him of spreading false information about voter fraud after losing the 2020 election to President Biden. He referred to the indictments as a "badge of honor" because he is "being indicted for you." Trump also criticized President Biden and the Justice Department, accusing them of waiting until he became a dominant force in the polls to file the charges against him. He called the indictments "election interference" and "an outrageous criminalization of political speech," claiming that they are a cover-up for the "Biden crime family."

Despite the legal troubles, Trump maintains a commanding lead among other Republican candidates in the polls. In response to Trump's social media posts on his Truth Social platform, the Justice Department has requested a protective order against the former president in his election fraud case. Prosecutors argue that Trump's posts are threatening and could have a harmful chilling effect on witnesses and the fair administration of justice.

They are prepared to hand over a substantial amount of evidence to Trump's legal team but want to restrict what he can publicly share about the case. The proposed protective order would prevent Trump and his lawyers from disclosing materials provided by the government to anyone outside his legal team, witnesses, or approved individuals. Prosecutors cited Trump's social media post, where he wrote, "IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I'M COMING AFTER YOU," as the basis for their request.

Trump's spokesperson defended the post as political speech in response to dishonest special interest groups and Super PACs. During his speech in Alabama, Trump dismissed the indictment against him as ridiculous and an act of desperation. He accused special counsel Jack Smith of being a deranged and sick person, and he criticized federal and local prosecutors for election interference without providing evidence.

Trump pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy against rights. This is his third indictment in the past four months, with previous charges including falsifying business records and mishandling classified documents. Trump claimed that each time he is indicted, his poll numbers increase. He also mentioned the possibility of facing another indictment in Georgia for election interference.

Some GOP supporters believe that the charges against Trump could actually boost his chances for re-election in 2024. Trump received endorsements from Alabama state and congressional leaders at the event, with Senator Tommy Tuberville expressing support and urging others to stand by him.
