US Scientists Double Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough

20:52 07.08.2023

In a groundbreaking achievement, American scientists at California's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have successfully achieved net energy gain in a fusion reaction for the second time since December. This major scientific breakthrough represents the ignition of a zero-carbon energy source that has been sought after since World War II. Fusion, which involves combining two atomic nuclei to form a single heavier one, releases an enormous amount of energy and is far superior to nuclear fission in terms of power generation and environmental impact.

The experiment, conducted at the lab's National Ignition Facility, involved shooting ultra-powered lasers into a centimeter-sized capsule containing hydrogen gas variants called deuterium and tritium. The lasers were converted into X-rays, transforming the gas into plasma, the fourth state of matter. The extremely high temperatures and pressure within the hohlraum caused the nuclei to fuse through implosion.

The first successful ignition occurred in December of 2022, with an energy output of 3.15 megajoules, surpassing the 2.05 megajoules of laser energy used. This fusion reaction created more energy than was consumed, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of clean and limitless power. The July experiment yielded even more energy, with a preliminary estimate of 3.5 megajoules.

The US Department of Energy hailed this achievement as a major breakthrough that will pave the way for advancements in national defense and the future of clean power. Fusion, unlike fission, does not produce dangerous waste that lingers for thousands of years. This development holds the potential to revolutionize the energy sector and mitigate climate change if scaled up to a commercial level.

While scientists have known for a century that fusion powers the sun, replicating this process on Earth has been a long-standing challenge. The successful ignition at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory represents a significant step towards realizing the potential of fusion as a sustainable energy source. However, experts caution that there is still much more work to be done before fusion becomes commercially viable.

The achievement has sparked excitement among nuclear scientists, who believe that fusion will play a crucial role in our energy future. Troy Carter, a physics professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, expressed optimism about the prospects of fusion and its potential to revolutionize the energy landscape.

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory plans to present their results at upcoming scientific conferences and publish them in peer-reviewed publications. This breakthrough not only represents a significant scientific milestone but also offers hope for a greener and more sustainable future.
