Canadian musician Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion in the feet during an argument in 2020. The highly publicized case, which has sparked conversations about violence against Black women, concluded with Lanez being convicted of three felony counts.

Prosecutors had sought a 13-year sentence, highlighting Lanez's lack of remorse and refusal to take responsibility for his actions. However, Lanez's defense team argued for probation, pointing to mitigating factors such as his childhood abuse, philanthropic work, and his relationship with alcohol.

During the trial, Megan Thee Stallion testified that Lanez fired multiple shots at her after an argument and accused him of attempting to destroy her character and soul. She further revealed that Lanez privately apologized and offered her and her friend, Kelsey Harris, a million dollars each to remain silent about the incident. Despite Lanez's defense suggesting that Harris may have been the shooter, she declined to identify Lanez as the gunman.

After seven hours of deliberation, the jury ultimately voted to convict Lanez. However, the sentencing was repeatedly postponed as Lanez sought a new trial, which was denied by the judge. Finally, on Tuesday, the judge proceeded with the sentencing hearing.

Megan Thee Stallion, unable to be in the same room as Lanez, submitted a written statement expressing the emotional toll the incident had taken on her. She implored the judge to impose a severe sentence, emphasizing that she had not experienced a single day of peace since the shooting.

The sentencing hearing extended into Tuesday, with the judge considering various factors, including Lanez's charitable contributions and the impact of the assault on Megan Thee Stallion. After careful consideration, the judge made findings in favor of both sides, leaving the final sentence yet to be determined.
