Morgue mishap: Woman declared 'dead' discovered alive in body bag

05:00 01.12.2023

In a shocking turn of events, a crematorium worker in Brazil experienced a nightmarish situation when he discovered that a 90-year-old woman, who had been pronounced dead, was actually alive. The incident took place in the city of S??o Jose on Saturday, soon after the hospital staff at S??o Jose Regional Hospital declared Norma Silveira da Silva deceased. The elderly woman was then placed in a body bag and sent to the morgue, where the unsuspecting undertaker made the chilling discovery.

According to reports, da Silva's caretaker and friend, Jessica Martins Silvi Pereira, stated that the 90-year-old had been admitted to the hospital in critical condition on Friday. She was unconscious and suffering from a liver problem. Pereira visited da Silva on Saturday afternoon and was surprised when the elderly woman managed to open one eye and see her. However, later that night, Pereira and da Silva's son received the devastating news of her supposed death.

The hospital issued the first death certificate for da Silva at 11:40 p.m., attributing her passing to a urinary tract infection. Shockingly, her body was hurriedly sent off to the morgue without allowing her loved ones a chance to bid her a final farewell. It was during the collection of the deceased patient around 1:30 a.m. that the crematorium worker opened the body bag and discovered that da Silva's body was still warm and showing no signs of rigor mortis, despite the considerable time that had passed.

Pereira recounted the harrowing experience, stating that "when he opened the bag, she was breathing very weakly. And, as she was no longer conscious, she couldn't ask for help, she tried to breathe and couldn't." The elderly woman had spent nearly two hours inside the sealed bag, struggling to breathe and nearly suffocating to death.

Following this shocking revelation, da Silva was rushed back to the hospital and readmitted. Tragically, she was pronounced dead for the second time on Monday morning. The new death certificate listed her cause of death as "septic shock."

The patient's family, devastated by the series of events, plans to take legal action against the hospital. Pereira expressed her grief and anger, stating that the incident was a neglect that she wouldn't wish upon anyone. The Department of Health has initiated an investigation into the matter to determine the circumstances surrounding da Silva's misdiagnosis and subsequent near-death experience.

The initial admission of the 90-year-old Brazilian to the hospital had already indicated her poor health. The entire ordeal began on Friday when she was admitted in critical condition. Little did anyone know that this would lead to the chilling discovery in the morgue. The crematorium worker's surprise at finding da Silva still alive inside a body bag was met with sheer disbelief.

The incident, which took place in S??o Jose, unfolded just hours after hospital staff had pronounced da Silva dead. After being placed in the body bag, she was sent to the morgue for preservation. However, the shocking turn of events immediately sent her back to the hospital, where she was readmitted in a severely weakened state.

According to Jessica Silvi Pereira, da Silva's caregiver and friend, the 90-year-old had been admitted to the hospital on Friday in very poor health. By Saturday evening, Pereira and da Silva's son were notified of her death. In an unimaginable act of insensitivity, the hospital swiftly dispatched her body to the morgue without even granting her loved ones a moment to say goodbye.

The crematorium worker, upon discovering da Silva's body still warm and showing no signs of rigor mortis, expressed his astonishment to Pereira. Based on the time of death, he expected the body to be colder and the limbs to be rigid. These observations only added to the confusion and shock surrounding the situation.

After being pronounced dead for the second time on Monday morning, the cause of da Silva's death was listed as "septic shock" on the new death certificate. The Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Santa Catarina has become aware of the incident and has initiated an investigation to ensure appropriate procedures are followed.

As the grieving family plans to take legal action against the hospital, Pereira reiterates the magnitude of the neglect they experienced. She emphasizes that no one should have to endure such a traumatic ordeal. The investigation by the Department of Health will uncover the truth behind this appalling incident and hopefully provide solace to the grieving family.
