Asylum seekers forced to sleep on NYC sidewalk as migrant crisis deepens

20:20 03.08.2023

The migrant crisis in New York City has reached a breaking point, with asylum seekers being forced to sleep on the streets due to the overcrowding of the Roosevelt Hotel, which serves as a relief center for migrants with children. The scene outside the hotel is captured by a Fox News Digital reporter, showing migrants wrapped in blankets on the sidewalk and a line extending around the corner of the building. The photos highlight the dire situation, with a young girl outside the hotel with a pink blanket and a migrant using luggage as a makeshift pillow on a ledge.

According to a report from Fox 5, the city is currently caring for over 56,000 migrants, with more arriving daily. City officials state that the Roosevelt Hotel is an arrival center for all migrants, providing them with food, vaccinations, and caseworkers. However, the facility can only house children and families, who are prioritized and placed at the front of the line. Migrants waiting outside the hotel are those who do not receive placement at the Roosevelt.

Mayor Eric Adams's spokesperson, Fabien Levy, acknowledges the overwhelming number of asylum seekers and the city's daily struggle to find space for them. Levy emphasizes that children and families are guaranteed a bed every night, but adults are offered temporary places to wait off the sidewalks. However, as the number of asylum seekers continues to rise, more and more migrants may be left waiting outside.

The situation has sparked controversy, with immigrant advocacy groups accusing Mayor Adams of using asylum seekers as props to obtain more federal funding. The executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition criticizes the city for leaving people to sleep on the streets, questioning the adequacy of available beds. Deputy Mayor Anne Williams-Isom defends the city's efforts, stating that they are at a breaking point and would not use people as props.

The photos and reports from the scene outside the Roosevelt Hotel illustrate the urgent need for additional resources and support. City officials emphasize their tireless efforts to address the crisis but stress the limitations of their resources. They appeal for assistance from state and federal partners and encourage migrants to consider placements available outside of New York City. The city's shelter system is overwhelmed, with tens of thousands more arrivals than it was designed to accommodate. Mayor Adams has expressed the city's limitations and warned that the situation will not improve, indicating that there is no more room available.
