Kemp skeptical of Moore's majority as DeSantis supports Willis impeachment calls

12:47 19.08.2023

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential ticket, recently had a private meeting with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp at a hotel in Buckhead, Georgia. DeSantis was in Georgia for an appearance on radio host Erick Erickson's talk show, where he was joined by other presidential candidates. The two governors did not discuss endorsements during their meeting, according to sources. Both DeSantis and Kemp have been active in the political landscape, with Kemp also speaking with former Vice President Mike Pence, who is also running for the Republican nomination.

However, Kemp has been trying to distance himself from Georgia's ongoing racketeering case against former President Donald Trump. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis recently held a press conference, announcing charges against Trump and several others. Willis gave them until August 25 to surrender to law enforcement, expressing her desire for a trial to take place within six months.

In the midst of this legal battle, State Senator Colton Moore sent a letter to Kemp, claiming to have the support of "3/5 of each respective house" in the state legislature for his efforts to impeach District Attorney Willis. Kemp's office, however, stated that Moore has not provided evidence to support this claim. Moore clarified that his statement in the letter was not accurate and that he needs 3/5 of his colleagues to sign the letter.

Moore's motion to call a special session and impeach Willis stems from his belief that America is under attack and that radical left prosecutors are politically targeting political opponents. Kemp's office refrained from commenting on Moore's bid to impeach Willis due to the governor's involvement in the case. Cody Hall, one of Kemp's senior advisers, questioned the motives behind the push for a special session, paralleling it to the events leading up to the Republicans' loss in the Senate runoffs in January 2021.

The meeting between DeSantis and Kemp, along with the ongoing legal battle against Trump and the impeachment efforts against Willis, highlight the complex political landscape in Georgia. As both DeSantis and Kemp navigate their own political aspirations, their actions and conversations are being closely scrutinized. The outcome of these events could have significant implications for the future of the Republican Party and the 2024 presidential race.
